Even the tidiest home can get a deep clean every once in a while. To avoid feeling overwhelmed when cleaning your home thoroughly, break the process into smaller, more manageable tasks. Our detailed house cleaning guide gets you started with six basic tasks. Once these are done, you can move on to room-specific tasks. This whole house cleaning checklist will come in handy before you start your venture, or when the daily clutter and clutter start to pile up. These steps can also be performed as part of your annual spring or fall cleaning schedule. You’ll soon have a clean, tidy home that stands up to inspection in white gloves.

How To Thoroughly Clean Your House

As you tour each room in your home, start with these general cleaning tips to streamline the process.

1. Tidy up before big cleaning

Find (or preferably remove) any visible clutter that doesn’t belong in the room. To simplify your cleaning checklist, put things behind closed doors for another day. Eliminating clutter makes cleaning easier and motivates you to keep cleaning.

2. Start high and go low

Tackle large, hard-to-reach surfaces in the following order: Ceilings, ceiling trim, ceiling lights (including light bulbs), walls, other trim, and skirting. The best tools for these surfaces are a clean microfiber mop or telescopic handle duster. Bonus: These tools are usually thin enough to fit behind the sofa without moving it. It is enough to sprinkle the mop with water at eye level. Surfaces close to the ground tend to collect dirt and dust, so use lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap. Add a little white vinegar to the bathroom mixture to stop mold and mildew. Use a microfiber cloth for areas that are difficult or uncomfortable to mop. Rinse well and squeeze well.

3. Thoroughly clean the windows

Cleaning windows is so easy and the payoff is enormous. First vacuum the sill and rail. Next, spray the window with glass cleaner from top to bottom. Let the cleaner sit for 1 minute, then wipe it off. By swiping the inner window in one direction and the outer window in another order, you can easily see and fix the streaks.

4. Clean all the blades or blinds

Eliminates the hassle of dismantling blinds, all you really have to do is vacuum them up with the brush attachment. Instead of washing and ironing the curtains, fluff them in the dryer for a few minutes while wiping the rods and rings. Then hang them up right away.

5. Remove dust from the surface

Wipe down remaining hard surfaces (wooden furniture, shelves, built-ins, etc.) with furniture cleaner and polish and a soft cloth. For an even quicker cleanup, slip a clean cotton tube into his dominant hand to dust the surface and use your other hand to push the item out of the way. Finally, take the lint roller to the lampshade.

6. Sweep the floor thoroughly

Furniture needs to be moved to do this properly. Larger items like beds and sofas also need to be moved. Place furniture glides under the legs of large pieces to facilitate the movement of heavy pieces. Next, break the vacuum crevice tool to remove the dirt along the corners and baseboards. If the floor is hard, clean it with a microfiber mop and a cleaner suitable for the surface. If you have carpet, now is a good time to hire a professional vacuum cleaner. Also, if you have pets or children, consider investing more stuff.

Deep Cleaning House Checklist

Follow the steps below to thoroughly clean every room in your home:

Deep clean your bedroom

  1. Laundry of bed linen: You can wash bedspreads, duvet covers, covers, pillows, and even down-stuffed items. Give it an extra spin to speed drying, and dry the pillow with a clean tennis ball on a low setting to prevent clumping. The best way to dry synthetic pillows is to air dry them outdoors. Head to the laundromat for bulky duvets and use one of the oversized front loaders.
  2. Refresh mattress: Clean the mattress while disassembling the bed. Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and let it sit for an hour, then vacuum with a hose attachment. Repeat the process, twisting and turning the mattress according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Clean up your closet: Take out the clothes you didn’t wear last season and bag them up to ship or donate. Then treat your wardrobe with matching hangers. When your closet looks tidy, it takes more effort to manage it.

How to clean the kitchen

  1. Polish cabinets: Wipe off the exposed top first, then use a piece of newspaper or shelf liner to fit inside. Then wipe the front and back of the cabinet door with wood cleaner (use warm water with a spray of dish soap on painted or laminated surfaces). You can also try the tube sock trick by taking one on each hand, spraying cleanser on, and wiping off in a circular motion.
  2. Deep cleaning in and around consumer electronics: Wait until the refrigerator is almost empty before wiping it inside and out. Do the same for the stovetop and dishwasher. If possible, pull the equipment out of the wall to allow access to surrounding walls and floors.
  3. Neat counter: Remove everything from the counter, clean along with the backsplash, and dry thoroughly. Once the surface is dry, put back only the items you use every day. Find all other hidden spots. Bonus deep cleaning task: Take everything off the pantry shelf and wipe it down. When cleaning, consider using a large roasting pan as a crumb catcher. You can also rent an air compressor to blow the dust off your refrigerator coils for greater efficiency.

How to deep clean your bathroom

  1. Wash shower curtain: Check the label first. However, most shower curtains can be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. Set the dryer to low speed, remove the curtains, and hang them up again before they are completely dry. Wash the plastic shower liner in cold water and hang it to dry or buy a new one.
  2. Make your shower door sparkle: To remove water stains and soap scum, heat distilled white vinegar, wipe the door, reapply, and let it soak for 30 minutes. Then dust a non-scratch pad with baking soda and scrub. To keep your shower cleaner longer, add a squeegee and switch to a glycerin soap. The animal fats and talc found in regular soaps leave behind these nasty residues.
  3. Clear the sink and cupboards: Bring order to the chaos under the sink. Pull everything out, throw what doesn’t belong there, wipe out what does, and reload by category. Repeat for the medicine cabinet or additional cabinets.

Deep clean your living room and family room

  1. Renew furniture: Remove the cushions and vacuum all upholstered surfaces, including the backrest, with the brush attachment.
  2. Dust all the frames: Remove all framed artwork and photos and wipe the front and back with a damp microfiber cloth. Be careful not to spray anything directly on the glass. It can crawl into the corners of your picture frame and ruin your painting or mat.
  3. Dust under electronics: No need to unhook and move everything to clean your electronics. Just run it under the component with an ultra-thin vacuum cleaner.

Extra deep cleaning task: Wash all utensils and pillowcases. Also, take a close look at DVDs, CDs, video games, and other media hidden behind closed doors. You might be surprised to check out those areas.
