Cleaning the vomit from the carpets may be the most unpleasant experience among all the house cleaning tasks. Unfortunately, we need to deal with it at some point. Vomit could happen when our family member is very sick, the pets ate something they shouldn’t eat or some friends drink a bit more during a home party. Indeed, when the vomit is left on a carpet, it is troublesome since the liquid could penetrate into the fabric, making it hard to be cleaned and the vomit could leave a permanent smell. In this article, Sparkling and Beyond will teach you how to clean the vomit on your carpets properly so that you don’t need to replace the carpets entirely. Before you start with these methods, you should check the material of your carpets to make sure the methods below are applicable. Also, test the following methods on a small spot on your carpets first, making sure the method is effective and not harmful to your carpets before proceeding to cleaning the whole rug.

Method 1: How to clean up the vomit from the carpets once you see it

The throw-up should be cleaned once you spot it on the carpets. If it is left without being tended, the vomit would penetrate inside the rug and make its odor almost impossible to be removed. To clean the vomit, the following tools are needed:

  1. A trash bag
  2. Plastic gloves
  3. A spoon
  4. White vinegar (distilled)
  5. A spray
  6. Dish towel

Here is how to clean up the vomit from the carpets. Firstly, put on the plastic gloves and use the spoon to scoop out the vomit and into the trash bag. When you remove most of the vomit, tighten the trash bag and throw it away. After this, water down the distilled white vinegar and sprinkle it on the vomit spot with the spray bottle until the rug is wet. Next, wipe the damp area with towels to dry it out. When a towel becomes wet, replace it with a dry one. After this, you can also follow the carpet manufacturer’s instructions of dirt cleaning to make sure the rug is 100% clean.

Method 2: How to clean dried the vomit stains from the carpets

If you miss a vomit spot until several days later and the stain is already dried out, there is still a way to clean it. To clean dried vomit stains from the carpets, pour some water on the spot to make it wet and scrape the vomit away with a spoon like the previous method. After this, repeat the previous method until the spot is clean.

How to remove the vomit stains from the carpets if you don’t have time

Sometimes you may not have the time to clean the throw-up right away as you need to bring your sick and vomiting cat to a vet immediately. Here is a temporary measure to deal with the stain. You will need these tools:

  1. Baking soda
  2. A towel
  3. A vacuum
  4. The same tool as previous methods

Here is how to clean the vomit stains from the carpets with temporary measures. Put the baking soda on the stain and cover it with a towel for no less than 15 minutes. Once you have time to take care of the spot, toss away the towel and vacuum out the baking soda on the spot. Once this is done, follow method 1 to clean the vomit.

Throw-up on the carpets may be less disastrous if you know how to clean it properly. Make sure to clean the vomit stain as soon as possible. First, remove most of the vomit liquid with a spoon and soak the spot with vinegar solution. After this, dry the place with towels and if needed, clean it again with instructions from the manufacturer. If the vomit spot has already dried, simply dampen the stain and repeat the same steps. If you cannot deal with the spot at once, you can pour the baking soda on it and cover with a towel for a while before removing the baking soda and repeat method

How to clean pet vomit from carpet

If your pets vomit on the carpet, you can actually use common cleaning products to easily remove it. Here are the steps to do this.

  1. Wipe off the vomit as much as you can with paper towels. Make sure not to press the vomit liquid further into the carpet.
  2. Spray some cold water on the vomit spot and you can do this with a spray bottle. After this, take a towel to remove the vomit residue until most of the chunks and water disappear.
  3. Now it’s time to make the cleaner. Simply mix 2 cups of warm water with 1 tbsp of salt, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1 tbsp of detergent and 2 tbsp of rubbing alcohol in a bowl or a cup. This is the cleaner we will use for the vomit.
  4. Soak a kitchen sponge with the cleaning mixture and wipe clean any stain left on the vomit spot.
  5. We still need to deal with the smell of the vomit. To do this, sprinkle some baking soda on the vomit to cover the whole spot. This will remove the smell and make the carpet dry out. It may need some hours for the spot to become fully dry. Once the spot is not damp at all, simply use a vacuum to remove the baking soda.
