Ceramic is one of the common materials used for floors as it is hard, waterproof, and comes in thousands of colors, patterns, shapes, sizes, etc. Especially, ceramic tiles are the perfect material for bathroom floors or shower walls. However, the humid environment in the bathroom brings some problems such as yellow stains and mildew performing. Unfortunately, water is unable to help you to resolve the issue. Sparkling and Beyond will recommend some simple solutions and detailed steps on how to clean ceramic tile showers

Why do the ceramic tiles become dirty?

Although ceramic tiles are waterproof, stains and mildew appear eventually if the bathroom lacks ventilation. Besides, shampoo/soap scum or other residues can stuck in the grout lines between tiles and cling to the surface of the tiles creating grounds for mildew and grime.

If left for a long time in a wet condition, your ceramic tile floor may become slippery because of algae blooming. Shower tiles, as well as other parts of the bathroom, should be cleaned on a regular basis (Learn How To Clean A Bathroom). Clean the ceramic tiles with Chlorine Bleach

Chlorine bleach or cleaning products containing chlorine bleach is a harsh detergent and disinfectant that are used for treating terribly dirty grout. Chlorine bleach should be the last solution when all the above solutions do not work as it damages some kind of microfiber and its smell is strong.

Instruction: Apply the bleach along the grout and leave it for 10 minutes. Then, rinse the shower tiles with water. Before applying the chlorine bleach, wash off any vinegar residue as it reacts with the bleach to emit a toxic chlorine gas.

Note: Don’t let any vinegar react with chlorine bleach, the reaction between these chemicals emits toxic gas. If you applied vinegar previously, make sure there is no vinegar residue when applying the chlorine bleach.

Maintaining your Shower Tiles

As long as shower tiles are exposed to water and regular use, scum and fungi like mold and mildew will always form on your shower tiles. However, you can prevent how fast they form and keep your tiles clean for longer periods with these tips:

  • Reduce soap/shampoo residue, for example, liquid soap leaves no residue or soap scum. Otherwise, wipe the walls and floor of the shower after showering.
  • Clean the ceramic tiles with vinegar at least once a week.
  • Ventilate your shower by opening the windows or doors. Dry tiles won’t perform mildew.
  • Seal up the grout so it doesn’t interfere with the glow of the shower tile.
