Laminate may not have the prestige of hardwood, but what this type of flooring lacks in ratings, it more than makes up for in durability and aesthetics.

Laminate floors are more stain resistant than wooden floors, but they do require maintenance to keep them looking great for years to come. Experts recommend cleaning laminate floors at least every two weeks. If you live with roommates, you may need to sweep your floors more often.

What is a laminate floor?

Laminate floors are made of wood composites. Compressed materials such as sawdust. Its resemblance to hardwood floors is often surprising, but this type of flooring tends to be cheaper, scratch less, and easier to clean than wood. This is because it has a wear layer that protects the underlying photographic layer, making it less likely to get scuffed or dented.

What you need to clean laminate floors

  • Canister vacuum
  • Mop (experts recommend reusable mops with microfiber heads)
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Soap
  • Hot water
  • Medium bucket

Commercial cleaning products are also an option.

How to clean laminate floors daily

Run a vacuum or swipe over the surface to remove dirt and debris from every corner of the floor. If you’re using the upright model, make sure the rotating brush is off so the bristles don’t scratch the floor.

If you don’t have access to a vacuum, a soft bristle broom will remove most pet hair, dust, and dirt from your floor.

Best Ways to Deep Clean Laminate Floors

Cleaning is suitable for daily cleaning, but if you want to clean the floor thoroughly, you need a mop. Experts recommend reusable mops with microfiber heads. This is the greenest option, and you don’t have to buy multiple expensive disposable mop heads. You can also get a spray mop: A microfiber mop containing its own refillable sprayer.

You can use a parquet cleaner to clean the laminate (the cleaning solution won’t tell the difference). Or, if you prefer a more natural, pantry-friendly route, you can create your own solution using a few household ingredients.

  1. Sprinkle baking soda on the floor
  2. Mix 1 gallon of hot water, 1 cup of vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap in a bucket
  3. Dip the mop into the solution, being careful not to create puddles
  4. Start at the back of the room and work your way forward to avoid swiping into corners
  5. Wring out a damp mop and finally wipe down the room to remove any traces of baking soda or soap scum
  6. Dry the floor with an old towel (or use a paper type)

How to deal with stubborn stains

It is rare for dirt to penetrate the surface of a laminate floor and stain the underlying flooring, but sometimes more than a mop is required.

  • As a general rule of thumb, alcohol is most effective at removing dyes, while acetone works magic for oily stains. Both require good ventilation, a mask, and protective gloves.
  • If your hands are heavily stained with paint, tar, or grease, use your time wisely. Allow the spilled liquid to dry, then use a rubber scraper or plastic spatula to remove it.
  • If there are scratches, try buffing them with a tennis ball. If you have trouble getting on your hands or knees, you can also carve an X into the ball, glue it to the end of your broomstick, and apply light pressure to the mark. No ball? No problem. A school eraser will do. When you’re done, clean out the eraser shavings.
  • For permanent or pen marker patches, you have many options. Write directly on the sharpie marks with a dry-erase marker, then use dry-erase wipes to remove residual ink or apply alcohol or acetone to a cotton swab or ball. Ventilate the room, then pat the area dry with a clean cloth.
  • Coffee, wine, and juice stains should be removed immediately. If the stain is still visible after wiping, spray the area with a solution of vinegar and water, then wipe with a paper towel until clean.

Four tips for cleaning laminate floors

There are some cautions that you need to be aware of:

  1. To keep laminate floors clean, wipe your shoes on the doormat near the front door, or keep your entire home shoe-free.
  2. Do not use steel wool as it can damage laminate floors. Abrasive cleaners, including those containing ammonia and chlorine, are also potentially harmful.
  3. Most laminate flooring manufacturers strongly discourage the use of steam mops. Using them may even void your warranty.
  4. It may sound counterintuitive, but soap isn’t a wise choice for laminate. Too much of it will cause deposits and spoil the appearance of the floor.
